Copper

Copper is one of the oldest metals used by mankind. Its use dates back to prehistoric times. Copper has been in use around the world for more than 10,000 years, with a Copper necklace found in present-day Iraq and dated to 8700 BC. By 5000 BC Copper was being smelted from simple Copper Oxides. Copper is found as a metal and in the minerals cuprite, malachite, azurite, chalcopyrite and bornite.

Copper conducts electricity by 97% and is one of the metals used as a standard for electrical conductivity. Copper has a wide variety of properties.

  • Good thermal and electrical conductivity,
  • corrosion resistance,
  • Ease of forming,
  • Ease of combining
  • Easy workability by showing low strength at high temperatures,

In addition, however, copper and its alloys have relatively low strength-to-weight ratios. Some copper alloys are also susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking unless stress is relieved.

Copper and copper alloys are one of the popular and versatile engineering materials available. The combination of physical properties such as strength, conductivity, corrosion resistance, machinability and ductility make copper suitable for a wide variety of applications. This can be further improved by changes in composition and production methods.

What are the Uses of Copper?

The construction industry is one of the industries where copper alloys are used the most. The list below shows copper uses by industry on an annual basis.

  • Construction industry – 47%
  • Electronic products – 23%
  • Transportation – 10%
  • Consumer products – 11%
  • Industrial machinery – 9%

What are the Application Areas of Copper?

The usage and application areas of copper and copper alloys are quite wide. Some of these application areas are given below.

  • Power transmission lines
  • Architectural applications
  • Cooking utensils
  • Electrical wiring, cables and busbars
  • High conductive wires
  • Electrodes
  • Heat exchangers
  • Cooling pipes
  • Plumbing
  • Water cooled copper crucibles

What are the Basic Properties of Copper Alloys?

Copper is a hard, ductile and easily machinable material. With these properties, copper is an extremely suitable material for pipe forming, wire drawing, spinning and deep drawing. Other important properties exhibited by copper and its alloys are as follows.

  • Excellent thermal conductivity
  • Excellent electrical conductivity
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Good biofouling resistance
  • Good workability
  • Preservation of mechanical and electrical properties at cryogenic temperatures
  • It has no magnetic properties (Non-Magnetic)

Copper and copper alloys have a peculiar smell and unpleasant taste. These can be transmitted by contact and therefore Copper should be kept away from foodstuffs. Most commercially used metals have a metallic white-gray color. Copper has a yellowish red color.
