Brass

Brass is a non-ferrous metal alloy consisting of an alloy of copper and zinc. The use of brass dates back to ancient times. There are material remains that indicate that it was used in the Aegean, Iraq, Georgia and Turkmenistan regions. Also, the Roman empire used brass for its coins.

Brass is an alloy made mainly of copper and zinc. The proportions of copper and zinc are varied to produce many different types of brass. The standard basic brass alloy consists of 67% copper and 33% zinc. However, the amount of copper can range from 55% to 95% by weight, and the amount of zinc can range from 5% to 45% by weight. Lead is usually added to brass at a concentration of about 2%. Addition of lead increases the machinability of brass.

Uses for brass include musical instruments, firearm cartridge casing, radiators, architectural cladding, pipes and tubing, screws, and decorative items.

What are the Characteristics of Brass?

  • Brass usually has a shiny gold appearance, but can also be reddish gold or silvery white.
  • A higher percentage of copper gives a rosy hue, while more zinc makes the alloy look like silver.
  • Brass has higher malleability than bronze or zinc.
  • Brass has desirable acoustic properties suitable for use in musical instruments.
  • It has low metal friction.
  • Brass is a soft metal that can be used where a low probability of sparking is required.
  • Brass has a relatively low melting point.
  • It is a good conductor of heat.
  • Brass is an alloy that resists corrosion, including galvanic corrosion from salt water.
  • The brass is easy to pour.
  • Brass is not ferromagnetic.
